DECEMBER 5TH, 2021
For Courtney and Steven's modern winter wedding, they wanted to combine Steven's modern style with Courtney's appreciation of all things vintage and artistic. For their venue, they chose The Penny, a unique event space in downtown San Luis Obispo with an industrial indoor floor plan and artsy patio lounge. By adding in lush greenery, delicate florals, and touches of decorative vintage flair, they struck a perfect balance between modern minimalism and vintage elegance for their December wedding.
The newlyweds first met each other while attending Cal Poly in 2016, and after two years of dating, Steven surprised Courtney with a proposal at Peppoli at Spanish Bay, an elegant Italian restaurant near Monterey. When it came to planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to return to San Luis Obispo to let their guests experience the beautiful central coast they'd come to love, so they booked nearby Hotel Cerro for their guests to stay over the wedding weekend.
DETAILS
FIRST LOOK
Before the ceremony, the couple exchanged a sweet and tearful first look on the rooftop gardens of nearby Hotel Cerro. They snapped a few intimate portraits in the privacy of the gardens before returning to The Penny.
CEREMONY
When guests arrived, they were invited to fill out a note for the newlyweds with a bucket list idea. Courtney, being as an English major, absolutely loves books...so we scattered a few vintage books around the venue as decorations, at the guestbook table as well as on the memorial photo display.
The ceremony was held indoors against the stunning brick wall backdrop of The Penny, where Courtney and Steven exchanged their vows in the presence of their beloved friends and family.
COCKTAIL HOUR
For cocktail hour, guests were directed outside to a patio with bistro lights and heaters, where they could enjoy the venue's lounge arrangement, grab some appetizers at the charcuterie grazing table, and peruse the memorial photo display of the newlyweds' collective family wedding photos through the years.
RECEPTION
When guests returned back inside, the indoor space had been transformed into a spacious, elegant reception hall. Decor was light and minimal: chiffon table runners, greenery lining the tables, delicate florals, and little white votives floating in clear vases. The sweetheart table settee, as well as the stand-up floral arrangements that framed the table, was arranged by Scout Rental Co.
DESSERT TABLE
The dessert table featured a simple two-tiered cutting cake from Blush Cake Co. with watercolor-like accents of frosting. In addition to the cutting cake, the couple built a donut wall themselves for the display of donuts from SloDoCo...a San Luis Obispo classic!
DINNER & DANCING
After a dinner catered by TASTE! craft eatery and the toasts, Courtney and Steven ended the night playing "The Shoe Game," a fun, interactive couple's trivia game where the bride and groom, sitting back to back, answer a variety of questions about each other without seeing one another's answers. It's a fun, interactive reception activity and the guests loved every minute of it!
