Blueberry Christmas Bombs & Christmas Presents

I hope you are having a very merry holiday!
Time has been slipping by too fast, but fortunately we managed to sneek in a little celebration with our sweet assistant, Kristi, before splitting up to join our own family celebrations. It was just the three of us for gift exchange, so we decided to make it a little more festive with some merry music, candlelight and the perfect cocktail to celebrate. Actually, creating the perfect cocktail is pretty simple…as long as you follow a basic formula of course! Gabriella Mlynarczyk, a bartender at Ink is a master mixologist that truly inspires creativity. Mark Wilson’s interview with her for Fast Co. Design says it all:
…when I ask her if there’s one secret to designing the perfect cocktail, she doesn’t hesitate. “There’s definitely a formula,” she says. “My basic ratio for any drink is usually 1.5 to 2 ounces of alcohol, to one ounce of tart, to one ounce of sweet.”
That’s 2:1:1, liquor to tart to sweet.
Simple enough, right? Oh boy, if you take a minute to read the article (or better yet, Gabriella’s blog) you will quickly discover a multitude of variables and layers as she likens cocktails to creating perfumes. So very enticing! I want to try them all. But, for today, we simply played with her ratio and created our own little celebration drink. Introducing the Blueberry Christmas Bomb:
The secret is frozen blueberries (as blueberry season is surely a thing of the past now that it is December). We simply added a cup of frozen blueberries to one cup of sugar and one cup of water. In order to make the flavor a tad more complex and develop that herbal note that Gabriella recommends, we added lemon rind and fresh rosemary to simmer for an amazing simple syrup!

We simmered our little concoction until the sugar had dissolved and the blueberries had shared all their gorgeous color.
While we let our syrup cool, Sam got busy on transforming our little glass ornaments into super cute sippers!
Simply removing the metal topper, taking the hoop out and stretching the opening open with the scissors made them perfect for a straw sipper. Ta-dah!
Using a funnel, we followed the ratio 2:1:1
2 parts spiced rum, 1 part blueberry syrup, and 1 part fresh lemon juice
We then topped it off with some ginger ale….but if that is too sweet for your liking, try a splash of club soda.
Time to celebrate!
