Spiced Hot Buttered Rum

I hope you find yourself surrounded by loved ones this weekend for the holidays! Full of warmth and good cheer! I know that some of you (like myself) still have to pepper in some errands today and tomorrow, in order to be fully prepared for Christmas morning. Sometimes, the rush around can be a little crazy with packed stores and bustling parking lots. Not only do I wish you a Merry Christmas, but I wish you a calm couple of days for preparation. Hopefully, you can couple up some of your errands with some good quality time! My sister is up visiting with her family, and it was so awesome running our errands together yesterday. Instead of getting frustrated with traffic and lines, we laughed about it and turned it into time to catch up. We may have even snuck in time for a glass of wine and split a sushi roll in the midst of all the hubbub. It was perfect! Getting things done, while enjoying time with someone I love!
This recipe for Spiced Hot Buttered Rum is something I wanted to share with you, in hopes that it blesses you with the same kind of enjoyment this holiday season. It can be whipped up in a jiffy as a simple but welcomed gift in a pinch, and it is a magical way to warm up the holidays. So, whether you gift it or host with it, it’s a win-win for a warm and merry Christmas!

This could not be simpler. All you need is a room temperature stick of butter and then mash it up with some brown sugar and spices. Once it is mashed up enough that it resembles cookie dough, you are ready to use it for making drinks or stuff it in a mason jar to create a gift set.

I used a little Modge Podge and some thin cork I had lying around to create a cute little gift tag 😉

Then pile in your Spiced Hot Buttered Rum dough with a bottle of rum, and you have a cool gift in a snap!

If you gift this mix, make sure to include directions for how to make the drink. All you have to do is add a heaping tablespoon into a heat-proof cup, add a shot of rum, and then pour over some boiling water straight from the kettle. I love to top mine with a dollop of cinnamon spiced whipped cream!

Decadent and delicious, this cocktail is a great way to warm up and spread some good cheer! Who needs dessert? This is so much better!
Merry preparation days for Christmas! Spread some cheer!!

ps. Bonus: If you want to make the cinnamon whipped cream, grab a carton of cold whipping cream and use beaters or a mixer to whip it until you see soft peaks. Then add a 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and 2 teaspoons of cinnamon. Finish whipping it up and serve!

A warm treat for this winter.

Course: Beverages, cocktails
Cuisine: American, British
Servings: 10 servings
  • 1/2 cup butter room temperature
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt
  1. Mash all the ingredients together with a wooden spoon or process quickly in a food processor until you have a "batter".

  2. Store the mix in a mason jar in the fridge.  (Note: I have kept this for 12 months in the fridge before, and it was still good! Just make sure its stored airtight...which a mason jar is perfect for!)

  3. To serve: Add a heaping tablespoon of the Spiced Hot Buttered Rum batter to a heat-proof cup.  Pour over a shot of rum and then top off with boiling water.  Give it a mix and then top with some whipped cream.  Cheers!
