Homemade Wooden Poster Frame

Thrifty Thursday

Laurel here, as much as I hate to admit it, I am a hard core decor-hoarder. There are (literal) piles of candles, jars, etc. sitting around my house that I can’t bring myself to get rid of, because “hey, maybe some day I will need a decor piece exactly like this.” These pieces sit there collecting dust, but occasionally I get a brain blast and one of my pile-ridden pieces inspires a “refurb” project. For instance, I made this water color koi fish painting for my boyfriend as a birthday gift few years ago. Problem was, I (foolishly) cut the water color canvas down, making it impossible to find a frame that it fits in. So, this lovely water color canvas sat in one of my junk piles for years.

Since this art piece had some sentimental value, I was determined to find a frame solution.

Problem: The canvas won’t fit in a standard picture frame.

Solution: PSSSSHHHHH. I like a challenge. I’ll make my own.

Supplies:

  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • 4 pieces of thin (3/4”) wood **I used pieces of wood left over from a silk screen drying rack. You can recycle pieces, or just buy some at your local hardware store**
  • Yarn/string
  • Tape Measure
  • Chop Saw (or hand saw if that’s what you’re in to)

I started by measuring the width of my canvas and cut my wood pieces so that there was about 1/4 in. of overhang. This was to make sure there would be room for nails on each side of the canvas.

Then, I laid two pieces of wood on top of each other and hammered a nail in on the right, left, and center.

This created a clamp, essentially, for my canvas to fit in to. I simply pulled the wood apart slightly after hammering it together, slid the top and bottom of the canvas in between each wood “clamp,” and then pinched the wood back together.

I finished by tying some cute yarn around a second set of nails at the top, to create a frame hanger.

And BOOM! My very own custom frame. Simple, modern, and best of all….SO EASY!
