Clementine Candle

IMG_3656I am constantly lighting candles in my house, in fact for my birthday this year I received 4 big wonderful smelling candles- my friends and family know me well! I just love the fun scents and warm flickering light, but this also means I need to be sure to blow out my candles (ehhm my husband is a firefighter hehe :))

Anyways, I saw this idea online and couldn’t help but try…maybe it’s just the pyro in me that was curious? Either way- i was shocked by this experiment and was excited to share of it’s great success! Clementine Candles!

What you Need:

  • 1 Clementine Orange
  • Sharp Pairing Knife
  • Olive Oil (about 1/2 cup should be enough)
  • Lighter

IMG_3640First halve your orange…

IMG_3641Next cut around outer edge so that you will be able to “scoop” out orange innards

IMG_3643Scoop out all the slices EXCEPT for the center pith (the white tissue), I used the other half to make a “top” for the candle- but later on I felt kinda worried about it catching on fire so I quickly decided to not use the top- it’s your call!:)

Fill basin with olive oil (try to not get much on pith, just fill the cup)

IMG_3647Now your real patience is tested, it took me about 5 minutes to light the candle- just as I was loosing hope it finally caught flame and remained….

IMG_3652Here is my candle with the top on, like I said after about ten minutes of burning I got nervous about the black edges starting to form- didn’t really feel like catching my house on fire (although my husband was literally just telling me he could use a good structure fire for experience-ha)

IMG_3653IMG_3657This little guy burned for 3.5 hours!! That’s right- and it probably would have burned longer except I had to go meet a client- definitely a success! I also LOVED the sound it made, it was as if I was sitting by a campfire crackling away. The only thing I would suggest you do is add some scented oils to your olive oil, for as cute as this natural candle is, it didn’t emit as much citrus scent as I had hoped (maybe because I took the top off?). But all in all- what a great alternative that doesn’t pollute and definitely could come in handy if you are in a black out and have some oranges? ha:)

Thanks for Zestin’
